Cryptocurrency market cap ranking explained

This ranking orders the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization — each coin's live price multiplied by its circulating supply. Market cap is the most widely used measure of a crypto asset's relative size, which is why exchanges and analysts rank coins this way rather than by price alone. Bitcoin and Ethereum consistently top the list, followed by large-cap altcoins, stablecoins and emerging tokens. Use the sortable table above to compare market cap, 24-hour trading volume and short-term performance, then open any coin for a full breakdown.

Understanding the crypto market cap rankings

How is a coin's market cap rank calculated?+

A coin's position in this ranking comes from a single number: market capitalization, calculated as the current price multiplied by the circulating supply. If a token trades at $2 and 500 million units are in circulation, its market cap is $1 billion. The ranking simply sorts every asset by that figure, largest first, so the #1 slot belongs to whichever coin has the highest total value of coins in circulation at that moment.

Price alone is a poor way to compare assets, which is why the leaderboard uses market cap instead. A coin priced at $0.50 with tens of billions of units can be far larger than one priced at $40,000 with a tiny supply. That is also why Bitcoin and Ethereum sit at the top: not because of their unit price, but because price multiplied by a large circulating supply produces the biggest totals. For a fuller explanation of why market cap differs from price, see the linked guide. None of this is investment advice — market cap measures size, not quality or future return.

Large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap tiers: what each one means+

Analysts loosely group ranked coins into tiers by market cap. Large-cap assets — broadly those above roughly $10 billion — occupy the top of the ranking and tend to be the most established, most liquid and most widely held. Mid-cap coins, often in the $1–10 billion range, sit further down the top 100 and usually carry more growth potential alongside higher volatility. Small-cap assets below about $1 billion fill the lower ranks and the long tail beyond them, where price swings can be sharp and liquidity thin.

These bands are conventions, not official categories, and the exact cut-offs vary between sources. What matters for reading the ranking is the pattern: a coin's tier is a rough proxy for maturity and the depth of its market, not a guarantee of safety or performance. A large-cap ranking does not make an asset low-risk, and a small-cap position does not make one a bargain. Treat tiers as context for where an asset sits in the broader market structure, and always pair that context with your own research. This is educational information, not financial advice.

Why circulating supply drives the ranking, not total supply or FDV+

The ranking on this page uses circulating supply — the coins actually available and in public hands right now — rather than total or maximum supply. That choice matters. Many projects hold large reserves that are locked, vested or not yet minted; counting those un-issued tokens would inflate a coin's apparent size and push it up the leaderboard ahead of assets whose supply is genuinely in the market. Using circulating supply keeps the comparison grounded in what can be traded today. See circulating, total and max supply for the full breakdown.

A related metric, fully diluted valuation, multiplies price by the maximum eventual supply instead. FDV answers a different question — what the project would be worth if every token were in circulation — and can be far higher than market cap when much of the supply is still locked. A wide gap between the two is a signal worth examining, because future token unlocks can dilute holders. This is exactly why the ranking is built on market cap, while fully diluted valuation (FDV) is treated as a separate, forward-looking lens rather than the basis for the order you see above.

What moves a coin up or down the top 100+

Two forces change a coin's rank: its price and its circulating supply. Because most established assets have a slowly changing supply, day-to-day reshuffling in the top 100 is driven mainly by price moves relative to neighbours. When one coin rallies faster than the asset ranked just above it, the two can swap places; when it lags, it drifts down. Over longer periods, supply also plays a role — new token emissions, burns or large unlocks shift a coin's market cap even if its price holds steady.

This is why the leaderboard near the boundaries — around the #10, #20 or #50 marks — tends to be the most contested, with assets of similar size trading positions as sentiment shifts. The order is a snapshot of relative size at a point in time, not a permanent hierarchy. If you want to see which specific assets are gaining or falling fastest right now, that momentum view lives on a different page: today's biggest movers. This ranking stays focused on size; the movers page focuses on short-term change.

Market cap dominance as a ranking lens+

Dominance extends the ranking idea from individual coins to whole categories. Bitcoin dominance, for example, is Bitcoin's market cap expressed as a share of the combined market cap of all crypto assets. It is essentially the #1-ranked coin's slice of the total pie, and it tells you how concentrated the market is at the top. A high reading means the leader holds a large portion of all crypto value; a lower reading means value is spread more evenly across the rest of the ranking. The same calculation applies to stablecoins as a group, showing how much of the total sits in dollar-pegged assets.

Read this way, dominance is a structural measure of the ranking — who holds what share of the total — rather than a short-term trade signal. It helps explain why the top few positions carry so much weight: a shift of even a few percentage points in the leader's share represents an enormous amount of value moving relative to everything below it. For the mechanics and what different levels imply, see Bitcoin dominance, or open the full picture on the live dashboard.

What are the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap?

The top 100 cryptocurrencies are the 100 largest crypto assets ranked by market capitalization — the live price of each coin multiplied by its circulating supply. This page lists all 100 in real time, led by assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

How is cryptocurrency market cap calculated?

Market capitalization equals the current price of a coin multiplied by the number of coins in circulation (circulating supply). It is the standard way to rank and compare the relative size of cryptocurrencies.

Which cryptocurrency has the largest market cap?

Bitcoin (BTC) currently has the largest market cap at about $1.59T, making it the #1 ranked cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

How often does the market cap ranking update?

The full top-100 market cap ranking — including price, 24h volume and 1h/24h/7d performance — refreshes in near real time, with the table re-fetching automatically every minute.
